On the 2019–2025 Mazda3 (BP), Mazda's US schedule counts services as maintenances. Each one is due when the vehicle status monitor (wrench indicator or message) comes on, and no later than 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months after the previous one. The oil and filter are replaced at every maintenance, the engine air filter at every third, and the spark plugs every 75,000 miles (120,000 km), or every 40,000 miles (64,000 km) on the 2.5L Turbo.
This guide covers the fourth-generation (BP) Mazda3 in the 2019 through 2025 model years. The 2.5L SKYACTIV-G is in every year, the 2.0L SKYACTIV-G is in 2021 and 2022 only, and the 2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo is in 2021 through 2025. The figures come from Mazda's US scheduled maintenance booklets for each of those model years. It does not cover earlier Mazda3 generations or model years after 2025, and this page gives no figures for them.

| Engine air filter | Replace | At every third maintenance: at most every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 36 months |
| Cabin air filter | Replace | Every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 24 months |
| Spark plugs, 2.0L and 2.5L | Replace | Every 75,000 miles (120,000 km) |
| Spark plugs, 2.5L Turbo (2021–2025) | Replace | Every 40,000 miles (64,000 km) |
| Engine coolant | Replace | First at 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 120 months, then every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or 60 months |
| Drive belts | Inspect | At every maintenance |
| Disc brakes, brake and clutch fluid level | Inspect | At every maintenance |
| Brake lines, hoses and connections, vacuum brake booster and hose | Inspect | At every second maintenance |
| Steering, suspension, ball joints, wheel bearing play, driveshaft dust boots | Inspect | At every second maintenance, at most every 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km) or 24 months |
Mazda marks each item R (replace) or I (inspect), and this guide keeps those verbs.
How Mazda counts maintenances
Mazda's US schedule for this car is written as a list of numbered maintenances, not a mileage chart. Each maintenance is due when the vehicle status monitor, shown as a wrench indicator or a message, comes on. That happens before the maximum interval of 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months after the previous maintenance. The 2019 booklet words it as doing every maintenance within 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months, or when the wrench indication comes on.
The count matters because most other items hang off it. The engine air filter is due at the 3rd and 6th maintenance, and the brake lines and steering checks come at every second one. Keep a record of how many maintenances the car has had.
Engine oil, filter and tire rotation
Engine oil and filter. Mazda marks R at every maintenance. That means the oil and filter are replaced whenever the status monitor comes on, and never later than 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months after the previous maintenance.
Severe driving shortens this. Mazda's examples are long idling or low-speed driving, as with police cars, taxis or driver's education cars, and driving mainly on mountain roads. In those conditions, replace the oil and filter every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months and set the vehicle status monitor manually. Only the oil and filter interval changes under severe driving. The other items follow the normal schedule.
Tire rotation. Rotate the tires every 10,000 miles (16,000 km). The interval is the same under severe driving, and Mazda gives no time limit.
Air filters, spark plugs and coolant
Engine air filter. Replace it at every third maintenance. Mazda marks it R at the 3rd and 6th maintenance, and the maintenances are at most 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months apart, so the filter is due at most every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 36 months. Severe driving does not change it.
Cabin air filter. Replace it every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 24 months. The interval is the same under severe driving.
Spark plugs. The spark plug row changed in 2021, when the 2.5L Turbo arrived. In the 2019 and 2020 schedules, a single row says to replace the plugs every 75,000 miles (120,000 km). From the 2021 schedule on, the plugs are split by engine:
- 2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo (2021–2025): replace every 40,000 miles (64,000 km).
- Other engines, the 2.5L and the 2.0L: replace every 75,000 miles (120,000 km).
Mazda gives the same intervals under severe driving, and no time limit. The 2.0L is in the 2021 and 2022 model years covered here, and only as a sedan.
Engine coolant. The first replacement is at 120,000 miles (192,000 km) or 120 months. After that, replace it every 60,000 miles (96,000 km) or 60 months. Mazda recommends FL-22 coolant and warns that other coolant may seriously damage the engine and cooling system.
Drive belts, brakes, steering and suspension
These are inspections, not replacements.
- Drive belts: inspect at every maintenance.
- Disc brakes and the brake and clutch fluid level: inspect at every maintenance.
- Brake lines, hoses and connections, and the vacuum brake booster and hose: inspect at every second maintenance, the 2nd, 4th, 6th and 8th.
- Steering operation and linkages, front and rear suspension, ball joints, wheel bearing axial play and the driveshaft dust boots: inspect at every second maintenance, so at most every 20,000 miles (≈32,000 km) or 24 months.
What Mazda does not schedule for the Mazda3
Several items that generic checklists include have no interval in the US schedules in Mazda's booklets for these years:
- Brake fluid replacement. The 2019, 2020 and 2021 schedules list a brake fluid replacement only for cars with an electrical booster. Mazda's US documents for these years don't say any US Mazda3 has one, and the 2022 to 2025 schedules list only the vacuum brake booster and hose.
- Manual and automatic transmission fluid. There is no mileage interval in the US schedules.
- Rear differential oil and transfer oil. There is no mileage interval. The 2019 and 2020 schedules list them only with a note that the oil should be replaced if the component has been submerged in water.
If a shop quotes one of these as factory scheduled, ask which page of the maintenance booklet it comes from.
Common questions about the Mazda 3
How often does a Mazda3 need an oil change?
Replace the oil and filter at every maintenance. Each one is due when the vehicle status monitor (wrench indicator or message) comes on, and no later than 10,000 miles (16,000 km) or 12 months after the previous one. Under severe driving, replace them every 5,000 miles (8,000 km) or 6 months.
When should the spark plugs be replaced?
On the 2.0L and 2.5L SKYACTIV-G, replace them every 75,000 miles (120,000 km). On the 2.5L SKYACTIV-G Turbo, in the 2021–2025 model years covered here, replace them every 40,000 miles (64,000 km). Both intervals are the same under severe driving.
How often does the engine air filter need replacing?
Mazda marks it R at every third maintenance, so at most every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 36 months. Severe driving does not change it.
How often is the cabin air filter replaced?
Every 30,000 miles (48,000 km) or 24 months. The interval is the same under severe driving.
Does Mazda schedule transmission fluid changes?
No. Mazda's US schedules give no mileage interval for manual or automatic transmission fluid, rear differential oil or transfer case oil.
