Rough Idle

How urgent is rough idle?

Check soon

A rough idle is usually a drivability problem before it's a breakdown risk. But it's often an early symptom of a misfire or vacuum leak that will get worse and can eventually damage the catalytic converter — so diagnose it, don't normalise it.

What does rough idle mean?

At idle, an engine runs at its most delicate operating point — low speed, minimal throttle — so small problems show up here first. A rough idle means the smooth balance of air, fuel, and spark is off in at least one cylinder or in the shared intake.

The big three cause families are: air (vacuum leaks, dirty throttle body, faulty idle control), fuel (dirty injectors, weak pump, bad sensor data), and spark (worn plugs, weak coils). Engine mounts are the honourable mention — a collapsed mount transmits normal vibration into the cabin and masquerades as a rough idle.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips, yes. Treat it as a job for this week rather than this month, and skip the long drive until someone has looked at it.

What causes rough idle?

CauseLikelihoodSeverity
Vacuum leak (hose, intake gasket, PCV)Unmetered air leans the mixture. Often with a high or hunting idle and sometimes a hissing sound.CommonModerate
Worn spark plugs or weak ignition coilA soft misfire that's only noticeable at idle. Check the maintenance history.CommonModerate
Dirty throttle body or idle controlCarbon builds up where the air enters; cleaning often helps and is cheap.CommonMinor
Dirty or failing fuel injectorA partially clogged injector leans one cylinder.Less commonModerate
Faulty sensor data (MAF, O2, coolant temp sensor)Bad inputs make the computer fuel incorrectly — usually with a check engine light.Less commonModerate
Worn engine mountThe engine idles fine but you feel it — vibration in the wheel, seat, or mirror, often worse in gear (automatics).CommonMinor

What can I check myself?

  1. Check whether the check engine light is on and read the code — a misfire or lean code cuts the search space in half.
  2. Note when it's rough: worse in gear with A/C on (load-related — mounts, idle control) versus all the time (mixture or ignition).
  3. Listen for hissing under the hood at idle — the sound of a vacuum leak.
  4. Look at the maintenance history: plugs past their interval are prime suspects.
  5. Watch the tachometer: an idle that hunts up and down suggests an air/vacuum issue; a steady-but-shaky idle suggests a misfire or mount.

What does the repair cost?

RepairTypical range
Throttle body cleaningCheap first step when carbon is the issue; some cars need an idle relearn after.Roughly $50–$200
Spark plugs (set, shop)Do them on schedule regardless.Roughly $100–$400
Vacuum leak repairA cracked hose is cheap; an intake gasket costs more in labor.Roughly $50–$400
Engine mount (each, shop)Varies by vehicle and which mount.Roughly $150–$500

Ranges are broad US-typical estimates for common vehicles at independent shops. Luxury brands, dealers, and regional labor rates can land well outside them — treat these as orientation, not quotes.

Frequently asked questions

Is a rough idle bad for the engine?

A persistent misfire-driven rough idle sends unburned fuel to the catalytic converter, which shortens its life. Air-side and mount issues are gentler — but all of them are cheaper to fix early.

Why is the idle rough only when the A/C is on or in gear?

Both add load at idle. A marginal idle-control system or a worn engine mount shows up under exactly those conditions.

Can bad gas cause a rough idle?

A tank of contaminated or very old fuel can, though it's less common than the usual suspects. If the idle went rough right after a fill-up, it's a fair hypothesis; it usually clears with fresh fuel.
